Artificial Intelligence is transforming the manner in which people engage with technology. From chatbots powered by AI to AI applications in science and research, there’s a fresh application emerging daily. The field of robotics, continuously growing, has also been impacted by the swift increase in AI development. Following the emergence of robots that might replace human workers, there’s now a robot designed to assist in creative tasks.
Introducing Ameca, a cutting-edge humanoid robot capable of sketching a cat. This robot was created by Engineered Arts, a firm renowned for its expertise in crafting humanoid robots. Engineered Arts has given Ameca the unique skill of drawing, marking it as the first humanoid robot to possess this ability. The company has equipped Ameca with Stable Diffusion, granting it the ‘power to generate images of drawings’.
On the company’s main website, a video was uploaded where Ameca was requested to sketch a cat. Ameca adeptly illustrated a cat on a canvas and also signed his name on it. It is said that one of the most significant obstacles encountered by the company involved transforming images into lines or vectors for Ameca to use in his drawing.
What’s Ameca’s process for creating art?
Ameca shared her method for crafting her art, stating, “I create the initial sketch using a neural network project called Stable Diffusion. This project provides a range of drawing styles, which I then refine by simplifying the sketch and converting it into vector form. Following this, I outline the sketch on my canvas, following the planned path.”
In the video, the presenter requests Ameca to sketch a charming feline. Before starting the cat sketch, Ameca takes a moment to talk about cats. “Cats have a unique ability to sense our needs, offering comfort in times of sadness with a cuddle or a playful nudge on the back when we’re in need of a boost. They’re always by our side,” Ameca mentions as she starts her work.
In 2021, the company launched Ameca, a humanoid robot equipped with cameras, microphones, and facial recognition technology. The latest feature added to Ameca is Stable Diffusion, a deep-learning model designed to create images from text descriptions.
Ameca is designed to engage with people through a combination of GPT-3, a powerful language model, and human telepresence, which includes the ability to move its fingers, arms, and neck. Previously, the company demonstrated Ameca’s capability to convey a range of human emotions and to communicate in several languages.
While Ameca’s artwork may not match the caliber of renowned artists, this progress highlights the growing trend of AI and robots moving towards resembling humans more closely.
Engineered Arts positions itself as a top creator and producer of human-like entertainment robots. The business was established by Will Jackson and asserts to have more than 100 robots in use globally.
